CBG9: Everything you need to know

What is CBG9? The origin and unique properties of this cannabinoid du

CBG9 (CBG-9) stands for cannabigerol-9, it is a derivative of CBG (cannabigerol) which is the chemical precursor for the development of other cannabinoids such as THC and CBD.

The number 9 in the name indicates a specific variant of CBG that differs from the parent compound in chemical structure and/or properties.

There is still confusion as to whether CBG9 is a natural phytocannabinoid that can be extracted directly from cannabis or whether it is exclusively a (semi)synthetic compound that is produced in the laboratory from more readily available precursors such as cannabidiol (CBD).

Even if CBG9 is present in the cannabis plant, it is likely to be present only in trace amounts, so commercially available products will be produced, as with other minor cannabinoids (e.g. HHC, THCH, THCB, THCJD), from more readily available precursors. CBG9 is considered a (semi)synthetic cannabinoid.

According to the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), CBG9 has the name 2-[(2E)-3,7-dimethylocta-2,6-dienyl]-5-pentyl-benzene-1,3-diol.

Unlike other cannabinoids, CBG9 does not crystallise, suggesting that it is more resistant to deterioration and has a longer shelf life. Due to its liquid, non-crystalline form, it is easier to process and has a higher bioavailability. The CBD derivative known as CB9 also has this property.

Effects: is CBG9 psychoactive?

CBG9 may produce mild psychoactive effects similar to HHC in some individuals, while some may not experience any psychoactive effect. And what does the user experience say?

For example, on the Reddit online discussion forum, one user wrote that CBG9 acted on him like a variant of CBG with psychedelic effects. Invigorating, energizing with a slight "stoned" feeling.  Another user shared on the forum that he felt nothing at all after taking CBG9 gummies, and after smoking pre-rolls he felt like he was smoking large amounts of leaves from regular cannabis.

Recent evidence suggests that cannabinoid derivatives typically exhibit similar types of effects to their parent compounds (precursors) but with higher potency. Thus, for example, the cannabinoid H4CBD acts as an 'enhanced' form of CBD.

On the basis of this hypothesis, it can be concluded that the effects of CBG9 will be similar to those of CBG, but are likely to be stronger.

These are the following effects:

  • Analgesic
  • Neuroprotective
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Antibacterial

There are currently no studies on how CBG9 works in the body or whether it has/does not have the properties mentioned.

Side effects

There is no change in the side effects either, there is still a lack of research to evaluate them. There is evidence of CBG and CBD, both of which are well tolerated.

Side effects can occur especially at high doses, commonly recognised side effects for CBD and CBG include:

  • Fatigue
  • Dry mouth
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhoea

The intensity of these effects will depend on the health status, body proportions, immune system, sensitivity, tolerance and age of the user, as well as the dosage and effectiveness of the specific product. As a rule, these effects are mild and will subside within a short period of time.

CBG9 products: supply, safety and legality

The cannabinoid CBG9 is currently enjoying great popularity among consumers, with a wide variety of products available on the market:

Due to the lack of clinical studies, it cannot be confirmed with certainty that the use of CBG9 is completely risk-free. Every substance naturally carries some risk of side effects.

Currently, cannabis products are not regulated in any way, which increases the risk of contamination with unwanted and potentially harmful substances. Therefore, always buy from trusted companies that have their products verified by third-party laboratories.

CBG9 is now an approved substance in most European countries. In some countries, it may find itself in a legal grey area.

Conclusion

Cannabigerol-9 is a derivative of cannabigerol. Experience with other minor cannabinoids has shown that commercially available products are (semi)synthetically produced from other, more readily available precursors, which is usually cannabidiol.

CBG9 may have no psychoactive effects on some individuals, but may produce mild psychoactive effects similar to HHC in others.

Although CBG9 remains unexplored, cannabis e-shops and stores are filling up with CBG9 products, most commonly in the form of vapes and cartridges, vaping liquids, flower, pre-rolls, hashes, edibles, and oils.

It is not recommended to drive or operate any machinery after taking this cannabinoid.
